TikTok’s Viral Migraine Hack: Can McDonald’s Coke & Fries Really Bring Relief?

Struggling with debilitating migraines? An unconventional remedy is currently sweeping TikTok: a large Coca-Cola and a serving of French fries from McDonald’s. What was once primarily an entertainment platform, TikTok is increasingly a source of health and wellness information, though not always from traditionally vetted sources.

For those battling troublesome migraines and often relying on painkillers, a surprising and unique remedy has gained traction. Dr. Jessica Lowe (@doctorbrainbarbie), a neurologist on TikTok, shared a video explaining this scientifically-backed approach: a large McDonald’s Coke and fries. Her video has captivated millions, amassing over seven million views and 452,000 likes.

According to Dr. Lowe, the effectiveness of this simple remedy lies in the combination of caffeine from the Coca-Cola and the salt and carbohydrates from the French fries. A large McDonald’s Coke (approximately 950 milliliters, or 32 oz) contains about 80 milligrams of caffeine. Caffeine is believed to alleviate severe headaches by constricting blood vessels in the brain, reducing inflammation, and mitigating stress. This dosage can potentially halt migraine attacks. Furthermore, caffeine blocks adenosine, a neurotransmitter that increases during a migraine attack and contributes to pain.

Dr. Lowe also notes that electrolyte imbalances, particularly sodium, can trigger migraines. Consuming salty foods like fries increases sodium intake, potentially relieving pain and reducing attack frequency. Moreover, since hunger or drops in blood sugar can also be migraine triggers, the carbohydrates in French fries can help stabilize blood sugar levels.

Curious about the claim, TikToker @millyhancockk decided to test the theory. Documenting her experience, Milly stated, “Try McDonald’s chips and a Diet Coke because I’ve had a headache for 48 hours and TikTok said it would help.” After trying the combo, she excitedly confirmed, “I can confirm it works.” Her video quickly garnered nearly four million views, with numerous users echoing its effectiveness. One commenter even shared, “I work in neurology and our headache specialist would recommend this to patients.” 

However, this viral hack comes with important caveats. David Walker, a headache specialist at Rush University Medical Center, cautions that while it might help some, it shouldn’t be generalized. He points out that fried foods can, conversely, trigger migraines in certain individuals. Furthermore, high doses of caffeine can lead to insomnia, anxiety, and tachycardia (rapid heart rate), and high-salt foods are not advisable for people with high blood pressure, and fries and Coke are not the healthiest options for migraine relief.

While the McDonald’s Coke and fries remedy is an intriguing and unexpected viral phenomenon, and may offer temporary subjective relief or a mood boost for some during an occasional migraine, it’s crucial to consider the broader health implications.
