More Than a Pretty Pad: The Waterlily Weigh-Off 2025

Waterlily

The late summer sun streams through the glass dome of a greenhouse, its warmth mixing with the damp scent of soil and water vapor as it settles on a tranquil pond. Giant waterlily pads, like jade discs, cover the surface, lazily unfurling. Their edges curl up slightly, as if in anticipation of a grand feast. For most, this is the image of a botanical garden: a place of serene, vibrant life.

However, every August, this tranquility is joyfully shattered by a global competition that takes the world by storm. This is the #WaterlilyWeighOff25, an unconventional “weightlifting” championship that has become a social media sensation. It transforms meticulous horticulturists into imaginative creators and focuses the world’s attention on the surprising strength of these seemingly gentle giants.

First launched in 2023 by the Denver Botanic Gardens in the United States, this global event is now in its third year, growing in popularity and participation each time. The star of the show is the Victoria waterlily, hailed as the “Queen of Waterlilies.” It’s a species not only of great beauty but also of legend. Beyond its massive leaves, its brief and brilliant life cycle is captivating: it blooms only at night, opening as a pure white flower on the first evening, emitting a pineapple-like fragrance to attract beetles for pollination. By the second night, the flower turns pink, and after its mission is complete, it sinks back into the water.

Enjoy this overnight timelapse of  the 𝘝𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘤𝘳𝘶𝘻𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢 waterlily bloom while you wait for the results of the #waterlilyweighoff25 🍿⏱️ The deadline for public gardens or zoos to enter is this Sunday, Aug. 24, 11:59 p.m. MT.    Each 𝘝𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘤𝘳𝘶𝘻𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢 waterlily flower lasts just two days. On the first evening, the white flower opens and enters its female phase, releasing a sweet, pineapple-like scent and a heat that attracts beetles. By morning, it closes, keeping the insects inside. During the day, while the beetles are trapped, the flower transitions from female to male, changing color from white to pink and coating the beetle in pollen. Upon opening on the second evening, the flower releases the pollen-covered beetles, which are then drawn to another first-night bloom, effectively cross-pollinating the plants. This intricate process not only maximizes reproductive success for the plant but also provides food and shelter for the beetles, creating a mutually beneficial relationship between flower and pollinator. ⚠️ There are no 𝘝𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘤𝘳𝘶𝘻𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢 blooming now at the Gardens but a few are close to opening. 📸 Scott Dressel-Martin

Common varieties in the competition include the high-rimmed Victoria amazonica, the more cold-tolerant Victoria cruziana, and the “Longwood Hybrid,” a powerful crossbreed that combines the best traits of both. The undersides of their leaves feature an intricate, web-like network of hollow ribs, much like the support structure of a cathedral dome, which grants them incredible buoyancy and weight-bearing capacity. It is this unique anatomy that allows a scientific contest to be presented in the most entertaining way.

From August 18th to 24th, more than forty top botanical gardens and zoos from eight countries posted their competition videos. To protect the delicate leaf, they typically place a disc on top to distribute pressure before carefully stacking weights. Last year’s champion, the Missouri Botanical Garden, set a stunning record of 142.5 pounds (about 64.6 kg), and the question of whether they could defend their title was a major highlight this year.

Representing Scotland in the #WaterlilyWeighOff25 💪 We’re testing how much weight a giant lily pad can hold, with little help from some classic Scottish treats. 🎉 Using our Victoria ‘Longwood Variety’ waterlilies, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh officially weighs in at 36.1kg! (That’s the equivalent of 1,444 Tunnock’s Tea Cakes 😲) Thanks for the challenge @denverbotanic – may the best waterlily win 👀 #edinburgh #plantsoftiktok @IRN-BRU is back!

The #waterlilyweighoff25 hashtag became a global stage, uniting the botanical world in laughter and friendly rivalry. From the British flair of London’s Kew Gardens to the “pizza offensive” at the Chicago Botanic Garden, top horticultural institutions showed off their unique styles, all vying for the honor of “Strongest Waterlily.” It became more than a simple weight test; it was a world-class celebration blending science, creativity, and community spirit. It revealed our quietly dedicated horticulturists as hidden comedians and the seemingly delicate plants as undercover heavyweights.

As the week of competition progressed, records were continuously broken, with the reigning champion facing fierce challengers from around the globe. After a thrilling contest, the final results are in. Taking home the crown for 2025 is Bok Tower Gardens from Florida, USA, with an incredible winning weight of 183 lb. (83 kg)! It was a close race, with last year’s champion, Missouri Botanical Garden, coming in a very near second at 182 lb. (82.6 kg). Securing the third-place spot is Huntsville Botanical Garden, with a strong showing of 176 lb. (79.8 kg). A huge congratulations to all the winners of this fantastic summer spectacle!
